National League 1 Cambridge - 9 Loughborough Students - 14 An end to end game for Cambridge and Loughborough Students with the Lb Studs scoring the first two penalties, one after 7 minutes and one after 17 minutes, converted by Owen Waters, as they took the lead 6-0. Just before the league a penalty was missed by LB Studs as they go into the break with the game in the balance at 6-0. Half Time: Cambridge 0 - 6 Loughborough Students The second half started badly for Loughborough Students as they had a player sent to the bin with just a minute gone inside the second half. Cambridge knew they must capitalise on this, and they did just that. Jack Green slotted home two penalties within 2 minutes of each other, levelling the scores to 6-6. What Cambridge did not order is the LB Studs converting a penalty goal during their time with 14 men, but Owen Waters was on the money again and they did just that make the score 9-6. Cambridge made two substitutions being on Ean Griffiths and Ashley Elvers and Cambridge kicked a penalty, Jack Green scoring his third of the afternoon, shortly before missing a penalty and a chance to put Cambridge ahead. With the scores at 9-9, Loughborough Students dealt that blow just after the hour mark and scoring a try, taking the lead 14-9. Oscar Hirskyj-Douglas did a lot of work to score his try running in from just before the half way line and touching down in the corner. Cambridge kept ringing the changes but they could not break down the LB Studs and Loughborough Students won this league game. Loughborough awarded Andrew Boyce the PhaidonInternational Man of the Match, for today's game. Cambridge: 1. Ben Ibrahim, 2. Fred Davies, 3. Shane Moynihan, 4. George Bretag-Norris, 5. The Shelford backs have 120 appearances, in the forwards they have made 461 appearances between them, but it was the three substitutes that bring the most experience. The three substitutes have 408 appearances between them. It was a positive start for Hertford Rugby Club who found themselves 12-0 up after 6 minutes having scored twice in two minutes. Before Shelford were able to come back they suffered another deficit as Hertford made it 19-0, with just over 10 minutes on the clock. Hertford were already just a try away from a bonus point. Hertford proceeded to kick a penalty goal making it 22-0 and Shelford had no choice but the spring the changes. They made two substitutions which paid off as Shelford scored a converted try just before the break. Half Time: Shelford 7 - 22 Hertford A good team talk from Shelford boss inspired a try from Charlie Baker, and Hertford hit back with 3 points from a penalty making it 14-25 to Hertford with just over 20 minutes to go. The result was sealed when Hertford struck with two tries, one of the converted making it 14-37. The bonus point was secured with these tries and Shelford scored a constellation try as the match ended 19-37. Hertford captain Ben Lloyd has said online that it has been an honour to have captained this Hertford side in the last couple of weeks and earning two bonus point wins. Shelford decided their man of the match was Mark Ryder, but the result was not what they were looking for. Hertford second team also beat the Shelford Nomads, but the third team were relentless winning 55-0 over Haverhill.

Charlie Baker. •Midlands Premier League Peterborough Lions - 31 Derby - 17
Another brilliant win for Peterborough Lions, just this weekend it was slightly more comfortable. This weekend Lions won by 14 points rather than just a single point. The Tongan superstar Semisi Sitanislei Tei got injured in the warm up and couldn’t play, the worst possible start for Peterborough Lions. The game was mostly back and forth.
Inside the first half, winger Kaz Henderson and prop Ben Howard scored the tries and Dan Malem converted one of the kicks. Derby scored a converted try of their own, before the break.
Half Time: Peterborough Lions 12 - 7 Derby
Derby then scored another try, which they slotted home. As Derby took the lead 14-12, it prompted a reaction from the Peterborough Lions and they hit back in a big way. The start of the comeback came from Jonathan Hill, the Lions centre who put his side in front, and the deal was sealed when Vaha Halifonua scored another try, with them both being converted by Dan Malem. Peterborough Lions had made the score 26-14 with a short amount of time left to go. Derby clawed back and penalty, but scrum half Tom Aviss put the icing on the cake, scoring the Lions’ fifth try of the afternoon and making it 31-17.
The Peterborough Lions were brilliant again this weekend and have won two out of two. This weekend then won with the winning bonus point and they were clinical in their win over Derby in the Midlands Premier League. •Midlands 1 East (South) Oundle - 39 Market Rasen - 12 After last weekends narrow defeat to a very good Leighton Buzzard side, Oundle needed a reaction and that is exactly what they did. They were lethal and piled on the points against Market Rasen to pick up the win. When it comes to tries for Oundle, who else but Robb Shingles would shine. For at least the last two seasons, Shingles has been unbelievable as he scored another hat trick today. They started early after Market Rasen were found to be offside, allowing exceptional fly half Will Carrington to slot home to make it 3-0. Following this, there was only one man who could strike twice for Oundle and that is Robb Shingles and after Carrington scored a conversion Oundle were happy at 15-0. Joy for Oundle, but then the rain came an made handling very difficult. Multiple moves from Oundle lead to paceman James Keane rounding the defence and making it 22-0. Will Carrington scored a penalty making the score 25-0. With Oundle running away from this one, both sides got a scores making the total 32-7. The comeback then looked to be on as a try from Market Rasen made it 32-12. With talks of a comeback fading rapidly, superstar Robb Shingles scored his third of the day making the score 39-12, after the brilliant William Carrington scored the conversion. An excellent first win of the season for Oundle Rugby Club who responded brilliantly to a tough opening day of the season. They will also be awarded a bonus point as they scored 4 tries. Paviors - 38 Leighton Buzzard - 14
Last week Leighton Buzzard beat Oundle in a high scoring and exciting match. Unfortunately this week they came second best to Paviors in a fixture away from home. Syston - 32 Huntingdon & District - 19
Syston struck first making it 5-0 with not long on the club as a much changed Huntingdon side, needed a reaction. They got that reaction, thanks to the reliable boot of Tad Chadman, who slotted two out of two penalties and Huntingdon taking the lead 6-5. With Huntingdon hoping to kick on and establish a lead, but after the Stags were penalised for three high tackles, Syston made ground and scored again making it 10-6. Just before the break, Syston score their third of the day making it 15-6 at half time.
Half Time: Syston 15 - 6 Huntingdon Rugby The Stags needed a reaction in the second half and really needed to score next, and that they did. Richard North crossed the line for Huntingdon, a brilliant try, that was well deserved. As ever the reliable Tad Chapman was on the money once again. Syston did score a converted try making it 22-13. Syston kicked a penalty, but Huntingdon returned with two of their own, Tad Chapman who has not missed a kick this season and his 12th succesful kick this year made it 25-19. Having already secured the bonus point win, Syston went over for another coverted try making it 32-19 and collecting all 5 points. A tough day for Huntingdon, but they did beat Borough last weekend, so have established a win this season. Next week they play the very well drilled Bedford Athletic side at home. Bedford Ath have scored 107 points from their opening games, both of them away from home, and scoring 7 second half tries last weekend vs. Bugbrooke. Peterborough - 21 Kettering - 18
The season is up and running for Peterborough now as they won against a well drilled Kettering side that included an international. Kettering’s scrum half plays for England Deaf XV.
They won, but with a minute before the final whistle, it would be a very different story. With the score at 21-18 to Peterborough just before the end, they conceded a penalty, but Kettering did not convert the penalty allowing Peterborough to record their first victory in the Midlands 1 East (South) season. Last seasons superstar Joe Andresen started the season as he left off last year, he scored inside the first ten minutes and converted his own try. New signing from Spalding, Michael Watts scored a good try to put the home side 12-0 up. A strong Kettering side kept fighting and a few minutes before half time they stuck making it 12-7.
Half Time: Peterborough 12 - 7 Kettering
After the break, Kettering came out with the bit between their teeth scoring another try making it 12-12. Joe Andresen then converted two more penalties, but as did Kettering making a draw with not long remaining on the clock, with the score at 18-18. With seconds left on the club, Peterborough were handed a gift and awarded a penalty making it 21-18 after another Joe Andresen penalty, making it a 16 point haul for last seasons star man. But, then the nightmare, Kettering were given a penalty with what was virtually the last kick of the game and a chance to draw level, but it was missed and Borough record their first win of the season. •Midlands 4 East (South) Bourne - 5 Thorney - 3 A match played in very good spirit to start the season as the two local clubs went head to head in Midlands rugby action. It is always tough at the beginning of the season to score tries, but despite a low score this match was full with action. The home side Bourne came away from this opening day fixture with the win as they scored the only try of the game and Thorney converted a penalty to make this match 5-3. Despite the fact Bourne have 4 points from this game, Thorney do get a point from this narrow loss away from their home ground. Brackley - 14 Stamford College Old Boys - 10 The Stamford College Old Boys were excited about the start of the season, but then again local character Sam Sargeant was more than ready to get down to business. Sam Sargeant the owner of SRG Elite, a company you can get top quality sportswear is the manager of Stamford COB, and he is the most charismatic leader in local rugby. His side narrowly lost today to a good Brackley side. After the match, Brackley rugby club took to Twitter to complement Stamford College Old Boys on the strength of their side and how good this game was. The opening game of the season is always tough, but a very game Brackley side picked up an important 4 points. SCOB earned a point but this is just the start, and they will know that they played well today and can move onto next weekend and look for a comeback to show their character. Deepings - 5 St Neots - 33 St Neots were excellent in the opening game of the season winning 33-5 against Deeping away from home. The Green machine struggled against a very strong St Neots team and they've picked up a winning bonus point and will be top of the 4th Midlands East (South) division. Bedford Swifts - 15 Wellingborough Old Grammarians - 15 A stalemate to start for Bedford Swifts and Wellingborough Old Grammarians and the scoreline of 15-15 was described as fair by both sides. Before the game began you would not of been able to predict the winner as part of the neutral, and a draw it was. Both sides will share the points and move onto big fixtures next weekend.
