West of Scotland Cup: Shootout glory & goals galore in Greater Glasgow
A great weekend of West of Scotland Cup action and it was brilliant. It is now time for the September break, meaning no game next weekend, so this weekend, I will be doing some special features based on clubs, so please get in contact on twitter, @__SportCentral. Please enjoy the West of Scotland Cup round up.
•Westcliff - 7 •Hamilton Acad Vaults - 2 The early kick off in the West of Scotland Cup, started with a bang for the Greater Glasgow Premier League team. The game started early as the opposition, a team full of Hamilton Academicals who wanted to make their match at 3, were beaten by a sharp Westcliff side, who lead the first half 6-0. The scoring got underway with Burns breaking the deadlock just 4 minutes in making it 1-0 to Westcliff. The goals then just flowed for the Cliff. Conor scored the next 12 minutes in, and just a minute later Laird made it 3-0. 22 minutes in, Barry Quinn scored the 4th of the day before the dangerous duo up top, Laird and Burns, both scored their second each on the 24th and 34th minute. Westcliff went into the half time break 6-0 to the good. The second half was a very quiet one compared to the first, a penalty from Mutter made it 7-0. Hamilton Acad Vaults did come back with 2 goals but that made it 7-2 and Westcliff progress to the next round. Westcliff Starting XI - Kev Graham, Tam Connolly, Gildi, Mark Meikle, Mutter, Barry Quin, Beckett, Conor, Nugget, Laird, Burns. Subs: Young, Gage, Lacon, Colin, Adam.
•Newshot - 1 - AET - 3 •Blantyre - 1 - AET - 3 *Newshot won 5-4 on penalties. What a game this was. Newshot were brilliant having gone toe to toe and battle hard to win this one on penalties, a show of the fortitude Newshot has. Blantyre were a brilliant side and they were clinical in the shootout. Newshot scored an awesome goal early on in this one, the excellent Chrissy Aitken, who has had a great season so far, struck after just 17 minutes. The result after the 90 minutes was 1-1 and it went to extra time. Many would think that it’ll be a goal to separate the sides, but there was 4 goals in extra time. In extra time, the goals came from the man who was named man of the match, Sean McSkimming who scored on the 95th minute. Sean McSkimming was brilliant all day and will be delighted with being named man of the match on such a brilliant and historic day for the club. The second of Newshot’s extra time goals came from the prolific Ross Stevenson who scored 113 minutes into this game. At this point of the game, no matter who you are, fitness becomes a massive part of the game, and it is excellent how Newshot continued to go toe to toe non stop. The assists came from Lewis Hammell, a player that is always setting goals up, doing a lot of hard work for his club, as well as Fraz Black and Andrew Patterson. This was a brilliant team performance from everybody at Newshot. Then came the penalty shoot out. From the penalty spot, Newshot were outstanding. They won 5-4 on the penalty shoot out, and Newshot did not miss a single one, and they held their nerve. They have continued their awesome run of form, and played a massive part in an extremely entertaining and nail biting fixture in the West of Scotland Cup.
•Helensburgh - 6 •UCS - 2 An outstanding win for Helensburgh of the Greater Glasgow League today, they beat UCS. UCS are a side that have been going really well in their league but Helensburgh were brilliant. The game was very close for 75 minutes with the score with 15 minutes remaining sitting at 3-2 to Helensburgh and he game in the balance. Then the goals started flowing. Helensburgh had a great finish to this one, testament to their fitness efforts and the hard work they have put it. They have given it their everything for 90 minutes today and got through to the 3rd round, a great effort and now they can enjoy the winter break. On Saturday we managed to speak to Helensburgh, and they've said, "Helensburgh moved into the 3rd Rd of the West Cup with this 6-2 win over UCS. Manager Sam Gemmell was delighted to progress. It turned out we had to make 4 changes to the team from last week and although we started slowly we managed to sort ourselves out and produced a decent performance. The benefits of a large squad certainly helps and puts pressure on the ones that missed out"
•Strathclyde University - 4 •Third Lanark - 3 Third Lanark came up against some very tough opposition this weekend, the Strathclyde University side that play in the Caledonian Premier League. The Caledonian league is thought to have been one of the best in Scotland and today they proved it. Third Lanark have been excellent all season, unbeaten in the league and today they went toe to toe with one of the best around and they were great. They've been brilliant and super striker Alan Semple is oustanding and continued that form Saturday scoring his 11th goal in just 4 games. Sam Robertson also scored a goal for Third Lanark today and the referee awarded Alan Semple the honours of man of the match. I caught up with David from Third Lanark and he said, "We played well today but unfortunately we made a few costly mistakes. We played good football but its about scoring goals and Strathclyde Uni scored more than us. They'll probably not have expected as much of a challenge and we've come away a little disappointed but the positive is that we've went head to head with a very good team and we've made a good account of ourselves".
•Jordanhill - 3 •Greenock HSFP - 0 An excellent win for a club that have been on the cusp for weeks and they got that massive win that they were after. Man of the Match Diarmid Sutherland was in a goal scoring mood for Jordanhill and did that twice. He scored two important goals. The glory goal was scored by Andy McCall, he scored what was described as a "35 yard screamer". A comprehensive performance to be proud of for Jordanhill. We spoke to Iain Brown of Jordanhill, who enthused, "a fanatic display, defence were terrific. Whole team worked incredibly hard and got a deserved result".
•West Kilbride - 1 •Calderglen - 0 A tough one for the Greater Glasgow League outfit Calderglen as they travelled to West Kilbride and played in a game that could have gone either way. It went the way of the home side, Calderglen did well for 90 minutes but the one goal in the game fell against them. A lot of positives to be taken from the game for Calderglen. Calderglen said about the game, "Tough away trip today in the west. Both teams down on numbers but a close hard fought game. One goal was probably always going to be the difference. Glen had the better of the first half. Just couldn't find the net. Kilbride hit the the post in the 2nd one of only a couple of chances they had. Glens keeper didn't have a save too make for most of the game as did Kilbrides keeper. Couple of injuries didn't help matters". Despite the result, Calderglen remain positive and have said, "Tough one to take but we move on to the next game".
•Newton Vale - 1 •Cambria - 7 It's never easy facing the reigning champions, and this was the case on Saturday. Newton Vale enjoying excellent form in the Greater Glasgow League. Cambria took the lead and were winning 2-0, but Martin Jones of Newton Vale scored and got one back, but then Cambria scored more and the result was as we see it now. A tough game, but Newton Vale are doing brilliantly in the league, so will look to continue their run after the September break. I managed to speak to Newton Vale and they were complimentary of the opposition. They said that, “They showed their quality in the end”, and explained, “a decent side especially up top and wide”.
•Boswell - 1 •Cambria - 2 Boswell who have been brilliant in the league, and especially defensively. Boswell put in a good performance on Saturday in West of Scotland Cup action. The goal came from Tam Daly and Boswell awarded the man of the match award to Steven Odunewu. Boswell said, regarding the game, “Tough game today against a top division 1 team lost 2 scrappy goals but not much between us and them but we will form this and it will help us improve”. They went on to say, “We were unlucky today maybe on another day things could have fell differently for us. Week off next week then we need to prepare for the Scottish. MTB”.
•Ardeer West Recreation - 7 •Crookston Castle - 1 Crookston Castle have been brilliant in the league this season, but they came up against a very good Ardeer West Recreation side. A tough day for the club, but they will want to get back to league action after the September break. •Cambusnethan Talbot - 5 •Colquhoun United - 1 The Ayr side beat Colquhoun United of the Greater Glasgow League in the West of Scotland Cup, a match that they ran away with. Cambusnethan Talbot were excellent up front and in scoring form, and Colquhoun United will be ready to get back to league action.
•Eaglesham (Cal) - 3 •Bellaire - 2 The side from the Caledonian League, Eaglesham beat Bellaire at home, but they were excellent, and pushed Eaglesham the whole way. Bellaire were excellent against a very strong outfit and pushed them all of the way, but Eaglesham earned the victory. •East Kilbride Y.M. - 1 •Uddingston Anvil - 2 East Kilbride YM, who are currently in second place in division 2 this season, they played out an awesome game against Uddingston Anvil. It could have gone either way at any point, but it went the way for the away team. Uddingston Anvil, a side that play in the CSAFL gained the edge and scored that winning goal, but East Kilbride YM have been in brilliant form and they will want to continue this run of form when the Greater Glasgow League resumes. •Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ - 1 •Red Star - 7 The outfit from the GDSML, Red Star were excellent when they travelled to Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’. A great result prior to this one in the Greater Glasgow League before this one, and they will want to put this game behind them and focus on division 2. Red Star were clinical, but Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ will bounce back as they have done so many times this season.
•Gryffe Th - 1 •Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ - 3 A brilliant in the West of Scotland Cup for Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’. They were clinical in front of goal and earned an amazing away win at Gryffe Th of the GCAFA. Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ have been excellent all season and today they continued that run of form, and pass through to the third round of the West of Scotland Cup. They will be delighted with this victory and ready to go again achieve similar results in weeks to come. •Inverclyde - 6 •FC Baillieston - 1 Inverclyde of the SAFL were lethal against FC Baillieston, a side that have struggled, but they will be ready to return to Greater Glasgow League action after the two week September break. •John Street - 3 •Easthall Star - 4 John Street were brilliant and made a great account of themselves in West of Scotland Cup action. They will be happy with how they did against Easthall Star. Easthall Star who play in the SAFL, played in this 7 goal thriller and John Street will be happy with the three goals. •Kelvinbridge - 5 •Westerlands G.G. - 1 Kelvinbridge from the SSML, beat Greater Glasgow League club Westerlands G.G, as they scored 5. A day for Westerlands G.G to put behind them, and to continue progressing in the league. •Milngavie Wanderers - 9 •Rannoch - 2 Rannoch scored two good goals in this one, but they travelled to Milngavie Wanderers. Milngavie Wanderers play in the Caledonian League, which is a very strong league and is one of the strongest in Scotland, so a tough day at the office for Rannoch. •Rannoch Colts - 0 •Irvine Meadow - 11 A day that Rannoch Colts will be ready to put behind them in a hurry, but they will look at the future. They have two weeks off now, and will need to focus on the league. •St Thomas - 1 •Firhill United - 8 The Greater Glasgow outfit, St Thomas were at home, but struggled today. It is the winter break coming up now, so that they can put the West of Scotland Cup behind them and go full steam ahead in the league. They have done well this season and will look to continue that run.
DIVISION ONE •Westerlands ‘A’ - 3 •Eaglesham - 0 Clinical from Westerlands ‘A’ who have beaten a very good Eaglesham side. Westerland are a good side and they will continue to do well this season, this was a brilliant 3-0 win, and they will also be happy about the clean sheet they achieved. Eaglesham will want to get back to winning ways, after the September break. DIVISION TWO •North Kelvin Sports - 1 •Ashvale Victoria - 8 A lot of credit must go to Ashvale Victoria who have turned their season around. They struggled in the early goings, during the President’s League Cup, but they picked up a brilliant result when they drew with Jordanhill. After this draw, they put in an excellent performance away at Crookston Castle in the league, making a great account for themselves and coming close to that win, and that happened this weekend. They picked up that win that they deserve. They smacked 8 goals in past North Kelvin Sports, a side that have struggled this year. Struggling to get players on the field, North Kelvin Sports are struggled at home against a very good Ashvale Victoria side. DIVISION THREE •Carradale - 6 •Busby - 5
What a match in the Greater Glasgow League division 3. An eleven goal thriller as the home side, Carradale scored 6 and Busby scored 5. An excellent game, one enjoyed by everyone involved, a match that could have gone any way at any point. This match proves how great this division has been this season and how that will continue.
