Rob Sayer

Rob Sayer has enjoyed another great year. The tall spin bowler has gone from Upwood, to Peterborough Town, to Leicestershire, stopping off with the England under 19’s along the way.

Rob Sayer’s career began at Upwood a junior, along with his little brother, the also talented, but fast bowler David Sayer, currently in the first team at Peterborough Town. At Upwood, Sayer played under the coaching of influential youth county coach Ross Mitchell, before making the move to Peterborough Town, to further his career. It’s safe to say, Sayer enjoyed success at Peterborough Town. Being captain throughout most of his time as a junior at Town, he formed a dangerous partnership with Marcus Howard, and other talented players, winning almost every competition they played in. Sayer’s performances for Peterborough Town, earned him a call up for Cambridgeshire in 2013, before being on the plane to Dubai with the England under 19’s. Last winter, Rob Sayer went to New Zealand to develop him game and play over there, a move that only made him a better player.

It did not take long, for Sayer to break through into the first team aged just 15, in 2010. Sayer showed immense confidence from the beginning, and rightly backed the talent that he knew he had. Rob Sayer spent five very successful years playing in the Northamptonshire Premier League, before moving onto Leicestershire and playing in the England under 19’s. Rob Sayer’s debut at first class level, was at Grace Road against Derbyshire, in 2015, and picked up the vital wicked of Shiv Thakor. He batted well scoring 23, before falling to Sri Lankan international, Dilshan. He did return the favour and claimed the wicket of Dilshan, a man that scored just under 6000 runs in a 87 game test match career, a massive wicket for Sayer, as well Alex Hughes.

Over the last three years, Sayer has played well in red ball cricket, in 2016, his best first class figures were against the Sri Lankans. He took 2/47, and proved his quality that everyone knows that Sayer has. Rob Sayer is a sharp fielder also, in his two games in the 2016 County Championship season, he picked up a run out in each game, proving how good he is in the field.

Sayer played throughout most of the 2016 NatWest t20 blast season, earning best figures of 2/20 against Lancashire. Sayer has also been brilliant throughout the 2015 and 2016 Royal London One Day Cup competition. Throughout both seasons, Sayer bowled well and picked up important wickets, off international players including David Willey and Australian Glenn Maxwell. During the 2017 Royal London One Day Cup, he was excellent again, batting well adding valuable quick runs at the end of the innings. In December 2013, Rob Sayer was selected by England under 19’s, to go and play in Dubai, in a series of matches against Pakistan, in the United Arab Emirates under 19 Tri Series. In the second ODI, Rob Sayer scored 47 from just 35 balls, and took a wicket in 3 out of the 4 games.

Sayer hit oustanding form, when he went back to the United Arab Emirates in February 2014, and competed for England under 19’s, during the u19’s World Cup. They competing in Group D and he bowled brilliantly, taking 2/21, 2/33 and 1/28, during fine form during the group stage. As Rob does, he piled the runs on, scoring 13 runs from 6 balls against New Zealand, as England under 19’s progressed to the knockout stages. They beat India, and Sayer took another wicket, and was unbeaten on 10, from 11 balls. Talented Rob Sayer continued in the Semi Final, scoring 18 not out from 15 balls and 2/39, but unfortunately, England could not beat Pakistan, and were out of the under 19’s World Cup. Rob Sayer has had a brilliant season so far, and when he plays he is all business. He will be a huge player for Leicestershire over the years, and is just getting better and better. Sayer makes the players of Peterborough Town proud when he steps out to play for Leicestershire, and his talented brother, David is destined for similar fortunes. I am unsure if Sayer will be going back to this New Zealand, if he is, would want to wish Rob the best of luck. Rob Sayer will keep becoming a bigger name, he deserves the full support of the fans. Thank you all for looking and supporting this series of young, up and coming talented cricketers. Let us know who else you would like me to do, and any feedback is welcome. Next up will be a report about the pumped up spinner, Callum Parkinson.
