An exclusive Q&A with Sunday Central President, Alex McDowall.
An exclusive Q&A with the president of the Sunday Central League, Alex McDowall, a man that is passionate about his football, and wants to move the game forward as much as he can. He is joined by a brilliant team of people.
I want to say thank you Alex, Stuart and the Sunday Central League. A special thank you to David Ampleford also, for introducing me to the league, and providing unlimited help and support.
This Sunday, the Sunday Central League is in full swing, as the talking is done and it's time to play. We will be more and more interactive on twitter, so please can players and clubs , drop us a follow at @__SportCentral (two underscores).
On with the Q&A with Alex McDowall.
1. What is your proudest moment as the President of the Sunday Central League?
Strangely enough it was watching Eastfield star provide a guard of honour after Castlemilk dynamo had beaten them in the cup final last year, we had a few problems with each other, committee and Eastfield ,but their class shone through.
2. You have done a lot for amateur football up and down Scotland. What is the dream going forward?
Sounds cheesy but it’s about the clubs, for me participation is massive but we need to help clubs organise themselves better, too many teams folding so if we can help with structure then great.
3. Currently having 6 leagues, many teams, and the numbers going up and up, how big can the Sunday Central League get?
It’s probably reached its limit although we are looking at other options, one being a regional league for the lanarkshire teams and maybe growing things with satellite leagues/divisions.
4. The Sunday Central League offers something different to most leagues, as it has a group stage, before the league begins. For me, this is a brilliant idea, how did this come about, and will this continue in the future?
It came about thru a “brainstorming session” we throw all sorts of silly ideas on the table and take it from there. It’s not been a success in top 32 this year , we know what went wrong and will look to see where it goes. We pride ourselves on never standing still and not being scared to try something new or different.
5. You have been influencial in the rise of the biggest Sunday League in Scotland, what advice, would message would you like to pass on to everyone involved in the league?
Enjoy your game and always do it for the right reasons.
6. At Sport Central, he we will be running a monthly poll for both Premier and Championship, Manager and Player of the Month, beginning in April. We will also be running a poll at the end of the year, to select 2017's best keeper, player, manager, team and more. Would this be something you would like to see for the league?
Great idea, love it to be honest, it’s inspiring that someone who has never even seen our league wants to get involved and help push us forward.
7. On the eve of the full start of the Sunday Central League, are you ready for this season, how do you think it is going to go?
Always ready and regarding how it will go or who will win.... No comment lol
8. If you could give any adice to a young player wanting to play in the Sunday Central League, or to be involved in any way?
Enjoy it
9. An article has come out lately, about talks with STV2 to show the game of the week live. The match is going to be streamed live on Football Central? This is brilliant for the league, how can people find this, and what can we expect?
In fairness stv2 hasn’t followed it up, there’s still scope although I reckon it will need to be internet based, talking to a potential sponsor about this to help make it a reality. We also want to highlight mental health issues as we believe that’s something that should be encouraged.
10. It's been a pleasure to talk to you today Alex, your passion for improving amateur football is exceptional, and the Sunday Central League is brilliant, any further comments you would like to add?
Thanks for getting involved and thanks to ampy for the introduction.
Thank you so much to Alex for the interview, as mentioned we will be running a manager and player of the month contest towards the end of this October, please follow us on twitter @__SportCentral to vote when the polls are announced. More previews and round ups to come, please do not miss out them, and once again, thank you all so much for the support.
We will be conducting more Q&A 's in the very near future, please get in touch with your requests of who. Thanks for the support.
