Lethal Lanark, Brilliant Busby & Excellent Newshot - Greater Glasgow Round Up
Another brilliant weekend in the Greater Glasgow League, plenty of goals, a brilliant set of games for a brilliant league. Despite the highlights, I want to wish Iain Brown of Jordanhill, all of the best of luck in recovery from a serious leg injury this weekend. It is never nice to see this type of thing, and I hope for you to join us in wishing him the best of luck for a speedy recovery. The team of the week will be announced in due course throughout the week on our YouTube channel and of course on twitter, @__SportCentral.
SCOTTISH CUP ROUND TWO Bellaire 3-4 Rosehill Star A brilliant match between Bellaire and Rosehill Star happened in Glasgow this weekend in the Scottish Cup. Bellaire scored three times, but did not get the required result. A brilliant game including seven goals, and Bellaire will have a lot of positives that they can take through to the league with them. Westcliff 2-2 FC Clydebank After having a longer September break than most, Westcliff will have been ready for today to get started, and the result was a draw. They will need to settle this in a replay, and Westcliff will need to travel to FC Clydebank to come away with a win in the Scottish Cup. The replay will take place next weekend, and the goal scorers were Shaun Laird and Craig Nugent for Westcliff. I managed to speak Westcliff this weekend, and they said, “scrappy game not many chances our keeper kept us In game second half with a couple of good saves. Hopefully back to full strength next Saturday as we had 4 missing”. Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ 1-2 Auchenfoyle A tough day for Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ having played so well the weekend before as they drew 2-2 with Auchenfoyle, they now had a home tie. Unfortunately the home tie did not go to plan. Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ can hold their heads very high this weekend, they have been valiant in their efforts against Auchenfoyle in the last two weeks and it has gone down to just a single goal. Eastwood Parkmount ‘B’ have a lot of positives from the two games, positives that they can take into the league action with them. DIVISION ONE Jordanhill 1-3 Cambria Before we start the round up for this match, would like to wish Iain Brown, a gentleman and a passionate footballer, a speedy recovery, after suffering a nasty leg injury during this game. Best of luck Iain. A win for Cambria, who top division 1, and remain top after this weekend’s performance. They beat a Jordanhill who have been playing very well as of late. The goals came from Lynch, Matteas Law and another goal for Kevin MacDonald, who’s been in great goal scoring form for the visitors, Cambia. I spoke to Cambria manager, Roddy MacDonald, who said, “Very very pleased with our performance. Thought after the early penalty miss the football gods were going against us however the boys dug deep again and I felt we dominated most of the match. It was a great goal by Lynch to give us the lead , not many players have his vision. The players looked comfortable in the second half and again it was great play by lynch to deliver an inch perfect ball for MacDonald to finish. It was looking at this point "how many would it be" and the third followed shortly with a clinical finish from law. I think we took our foot off the gas after that and lost a sloppy consolation. We did well to see the game out on a pitch that wasn't conducive to great football. We hope the boy for GSC JORDANHILL who hurt his leg is ok. The boys have a big game next week in the WOS cup and on this form are really looking forward to it”. Jordanhill will take positives from their game against top of the Cambria, they will want to move onto next weekend, and look to take three points from next weekend. Jordanhill will be looking forward to cup action next weekend as they will be competing in the West of Scotland Cup as they travel to Galston United (AYR). Once again, I would like to wish passionate Jordanhill defended Iain Brown a very speedy recovery from a nasty injruy. Dynamo East Kilbride 4-2 St. Patrick’s FP A great game in division 1 between Dynamo East Kilbride who extend their run of form by beating St Pats FP, a very strong side. Dynamo East Kilbride will be pleased with their victory and that they want to kick on from this run and continue to play well. The inspirational centre back Marc Elliott, found himself in last weekend’s SportCentral team of the week, and this Saturday was brilliant once again scoring a brace, a brilliant performance from the centre half once again. I spoke to Dynamo East Kilbride, as they said, “again slow start 2-0 down at half time had a great second half scoring 4 once again a double from our centre half Marc Elliot same as last week and William stalker also a double” Newton Vale 2-1 Erskine A brilliant result for the in form Newton Vale, staying hot on the heels of Erskine. It was Erskine that scored the first goal, but then two from Newton Vale decided the result. The goal scorers were Ryan Millar and Kieran Zeb and they will be pleased with having fired their team home for three points. Strathclyde University 1-3 Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ will be extremely happy with their result this weekend as they beat a very good Strathclyde University team. The university outfit were brilliant in their first game of the season, but this weekend they had the visit of a very good side. Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ continue in their brilliant form, scoring 3 times and holding out very strong at the back. Three huge points in the league, but it is on to league action for the away club in the upcoming fixtures as they travel to Ardrossan Castle Rover (AYR) in the West of Scotland Cup. Westerlands ‘A’ 4-3 Glasgow University ‘A’ A great result for Westerlands ‘A’ as they pipped Glasgow University ‘A’ at the post, in a brilliant 7 goal thriller. Westerlands ‘A’ will be pleased with their result over a team that had won their first game convincingly. Westerlands ‘A’ continue their run of form into next weekend, and they will be happy with how they played today. Glasgow University ‘A’ will take comfort in their three goals, and want to take that goal scoring form into the next league game. DIVISION TWO Crookston Castle 6-2 East Kilbride YM Crookston Castle have been brilliant in defeating an in form East Kilbride YM who have not had a game for a couple weekends. East Kilbride YM did go 2-0 up in this one as main man Scott Campbell scored once again and Murray McLure made it two. Then it was a penalty awarded to Crookston Castle that lead to the games turning point. Crookston Castle played brilliantly scoring 6 goals, a great performance from the home club, one they will be proud of. East Kilbride YM will want to forget about this one, and then look to bounce back and hit top form next weekend. I managed to speak to Graeme Robertson, manager of East Kilbride YM and he said, “A penalty decision let them back in the game but they were worthy winners in the end. Hopefully get back to winning ways at the weekend as the two week gap certainly had an effect on our performance”. FC Baillieston 3-2 Rannoch Brilliant game at FC Baillieston this weekend as a brilliant five goal encounter ended in a 3-2 win for FC Baillieston over Rannoch in division 2. The home time edged out the victory and will want to keep their good string of results going. Rannoch will take confidence from this match, having come so close, and will want to change their fortunes in the next league game. Glasgow University ‘B’ 1-2 Ashvale Victoria What a great victory for Ashvale Victoria. A team that have struggled at the start this season, have put in a brilliant performance to conquer Glasgow University ‘B’. Glasgow University ‘B’ were brilliant in the first game of the season, but they lost to a travelling Ashvale Victoria. Ashvale will be very pleased with the result and they will now want to pick up a run of games, and to kick on and win more games in the Greater Glasgow League. Third Lanark 8-0 North Kelvin Sports Another cracking result from Third Lanark, as they put 8 past North Kelvin Sports. The deadline was broken by the main man, Alan Semple as he struck home 10 minutes in. A tough first half for Third Lanark, when they couldn’t turn it up that gear, but when they got going...they got going! Third Lanark were exceptional in the second half, and boss David Ampleford was pleased with having 6 different goal scorers. Man of the match was given to the Third Lanark player, nicknamed Pirlo, real name Marc Corlett. Corlett grabbed a double, as did Alan Semple, and the other goals came from, Scott Gemmell, Robbie Sinclair, Neil White and Josh Graham, a long list of goal scorers. For the season, Alan Semple continues his fine form having now scored 12 goals in his last 6 games for the club. DIVISION THREE Newshot 5-2 Boswell A huge contest in division 3 as Newshot hosted Boswell, two unbeaten sides that went head to head in a great contest. Last week, central midfielder Kyle Brown found himself in the SportCentral team of the week, and this weekend he took that form and confidence through to the next round with him, scoring twice, both in the first half, as well as earning two assists. Ross Stevenson has been consistently good for Newshot this season, regularly scoring, and setting goals up, and today was no different. Stevenson scored twice and also set one up. The result was confirmed when Jack Clark scored Newshot’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute, claiming a brilliant 3 points, and to remain top of the table. A great team performance from Newshot, including assists from Jamie Robertson and Fraz Black, they will take their confidence with them into next week. This weekend I spoke to Kyle Brown, Newshot’s man of the match. I asked Kyle Brown for his comments after his brilliant run of form and today’s performance for himself and for Newshot. Brown said, “We are at the top cause we are playing well it’s a team game and I’d be nothing without the rest of the boys, the only way is up”. A positive comment from today’s man of the match. We also managed to speak to Newshot themselves, and they said, “back to league action for Newshot who took lessons from their cup upset last week and turned them into their best performance so far this season. Newshot’s passing game was instrumental against a visibly unusually frustrated Boswell team. A result which puts us firmly in the driving seat for the league early doors and no doubt a crucial one come the end of the season. We will carry on that form into cup action this weekend when we face Ardeer. Kyle Brown was outstanding in the midfield however any one of our players could have been a contender for MOTM. except Liam Cambell who needs to hit the gym" A tough day for Boswell in a big game, but a lot of credit to the manager, who held his hands up at the end of the game, in his comment below. It wouldn’t be a game for Boswell of course, if the brilliant Steven Odunewu was on the score sheet. The superstar has been brilliant, and was recognised once again as Boswell’s best player this weekend. He scored the first goal, and the second came from Curtis McGunn. Boswell have been brilliant all season, and will pick themselves back up and go again next weekend, a test of character to find out how they come back from this weekend. After this weekend’s game, I managed to catch up with Boswell, and they said, “Totally wasn’t our day a lacklustre performance got starting line up wrong hold my hands up but switched it got back into the game but then switch off again. Too many players not at full performance today but we will learn from this defeat and will make us stronger for it MTB”. Carradale 4-5 South Lochaber Thistle What a brilliant game as this 9 goal thriller went the way of the away team. Carradale have been brilliant in the last couple of weeks. They picked up two vital wins against Busby, and did well to score 4 goals today, but unfortunately for them, South Lochaber Thistle’s Hungarian superstar was just in fine form. Hungarian striker, Erik Tot was superb as his hat trick gave South Lochaber Thistle the edge over Carradale to pick up a 5-4 win. His three goals were accompanied by a goal each from Martin Munro and Calum Marley MacPhee, a great performance to beat Carradale. I managed to speak to South Lochaber Thistle on Saturday, and they said, “A hat-trick from man in form Erik Tot and a goal a piece from Martin Munro and Calum Marley Macphee gave Thistle the points against Carradale in Campbeltown; making the 7 hour round trip a happy one for the travelling side. SLT dominated much of the game and could have gone in at half time 5 or 6 goal into the good with Tot, Munro and Johnston all unlucky with strikes. A poor past ten minutes saw Carradale claw back 3 goals but SLT held on for the victory their play deserved. An improvement again from thistle who got their first points of the season on the board. Always a pleasure to play Carradale and we look forward to welcoming them up to Kinlochleven later in the season”. St Thomas 0-9 Busby Busby have had a couple of tough weekends as of late as they had a double header against Carradale, and narrowly lost twice, and knew that they needed a win. They did just that. Busby were phenomenal as they won 9-0. It was always going to be tough for St Thomas after they received two red cards in the first half an hour and a young Busby side capitalised. A tough day at the office for St Thomas, who will be quick to put this one behind them and to continue next week. Busby will be proud of their reply to two tough weekends building up to this game. A result that proves how interesting and exciting the Greater Glasgow League is. PRESIDENT’S LEAGUE CUP SECTION 3 Helensburgh 1-0 Colquhoun United The brilliant run of Helensburgh continues as they have now gone unbeaten in 6 games, as they beat Colquhoun United at home. A tough game with just a goal between the two teams. Sam Gemmell has got his side playing brilliant football and they will be ready to go in league action having played in President’s League Cup action this weekend. Colquhoun United will have a lot of positives from the match that they can take forward with them into league action. Having played in many cup games as of late, the job for Helensburgh is not done as they will be competing in the next round of the West of Scotland Cup next week. Their third round opponents are EKRR of the SAFL and Helensburgh are on the road. They will want to continue their unbeaten streak for a few weeks longer. I managed to speak to Helensburgh as well as manager Sam Gemmell this weekend, and they have said, “A 1-0 win over Colquhoun Utd in the league cup took Helensburgh’s unbeaten run to 6 wins in 6 games. A Brooks Tadlock goal with minutes remaining kept the run going. Manager Sam Gemmell was full of praise for his team. We dominated the majority of the game but a really well organised Colquhoun defence kept the chances to s minimum. Credit to our lads though as they kept going right to the end”. A brilliant weekend in the Greater Glasgow League and more to come next weekend. Be sure to check out the preview for next weekenda game when it is live. Thank you so much for the support as always. Be sure to look out for the team of the week on YouTube.
