Unstoppable Third Lanark, Excellent East Kilbride, lots of rain & a broken down bus!
A weather affected weekend in the Greater Glasgow League as many games were called off, but the ones that did take place, were brilliant. Many reasons for games being called off, mainly weather and one game called off due to a broken down team bus. Every game in the Greater Glasgow League division 3 was called off this weekend, but the other two divisions are starting to take shape. Exciting cup action for all teams that competed, and a many more games to come in the Greater Glasgow league, with schedules looking set to get very busy for all clubs. Scottish Cup (Round 2) Port Glasgow 0-1 John Street A great win for John Street, one they will be very happy with, having tried to get this game on multiple times. They scored a late winner in this one, a brilliant start for John Street, they will now progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup. West of Scotland Cup (Round 3) Ardrossan Castle Rover 2-1 Eastwood Parkmount ‘A’ A tough game for Eastwood Parkmount away from home in the West of Scotland Cup. They have been in a great run of form, and they will now want to put cup games behind them, and get back on track in the league. They have been exceptional in the league and they will hope to continue that, and will take positives from this weekend’s game. Galston United 4-3 Jordanhill A thrilling game in the West of Scotland Cup, Jordanhill were outstanding away from home in Galston United. Jordanhill began the day with their backs against the wall, having 10 men sat on the sideline, and a lot of injuries at the back. They had a young side, and they stood up today and they were brilliant. Jordanhill were losing 2-0 at half time, and they came back brilliantly, two goals from Toby Cole and the other goal was scored by Jamie Parker. Jordanhill played brilliantly and they are going to take a lot of confidence into league action with them. I managed to speak Iain Brown of Jordanhill and he said, “Outstanding performance today, very unlucky considering we were missing 10 players. Lost 4-3, but reacted really well after being 2 down at half time. Man of the match was our goalkeeper Mark Reid, who made unbelievable saves and set up our equaliser at 2-2. Youngsters Ross Mulholland, Drew Niven and Jude Wilson really stood up to the fight. Out the cup, but a lot of lessons learned”. Newshot 1-1p Ardeer West Recreation A shocker in the West of Scotland Cup, and a game that would not have gone as expected throughout. The game went to penalties, in which Ardeer West Recreation came out on top. The build up to penalties however, was not a normal build up. Ardeer went into the penalties with just 8 men, as they had three men sent off, at this point you would not have expected them to have made it as far as penalties. Also on the run up to penalties, Newshot were awarded three penalties, to which non of them were converted. So far this season, there has been a dull moment in Newshot’s season, they have been brilliant, but will be shocked to be out of the West of Scotland Cup today. They will look to now continue their brilliant run in the league, currently sitting unbeaten in division 3. I spoke to a shocked Newshot, and they have said, “1-1 after 90 mins a game which should have been dead and buried by Newshot long before then. Ardeer having no less than 3 players sent off and Newshot having 3 penalties saved 2 in regulation time and 1 in extra time. A tough fought battle by 8 men Ardeer who clearly wanted it more than Newshot. A sore one no doubt and a tough lesson learned. Speechless”. Division 1 Erskine 4-2 Strathclyde University Erskine continue to play brilliantly as they picked up a good win against Strathclyde University. Erskine will be very happy with their win over a young and quick side, who have had a mixed start to the season. Erskine will be very pleased and will want to continue an excellent start to the season, in the weeks to come. Erskine are up to 5th in the league, and Strathclyde University are 9th, but will take positives from this weekend’s game. Glasgow University ‘A’ 2-3 Dynamo East Kilbride A belter of game at Glasgow University this weekend as Dynamo East Kilbride continue a brilliant run of games that they have had. This weekend, it was William Stalker that scored a double, after scoring a good goal last weekend also. The winner was scored by Matt Lochrie, a proud moment, and he will take confidence from this. William Stalker was awarded the man of the match award in this one, and will be pleased with another great performance. Glasgow University will take positives into next weekend, and hope to get back to winning ways. Dynamo East Kilbride are 6th now, and will hope to continue their form and continue a rise up the league table. “After going a goal behind for the 3rd week in a row disappointed with that a tough game probably a draw would've been fair but we nicked it near the end”. St. Patrick’s FP 3-0 Westerlands ‘A’ A huge victory this weekend for St. Patrick’s FP as they not only scored three goals and picked up three points, but have kept a clean sheet. They will be pleased with this result and will know that it has the potential to kick start the season and begin a run of wins for the club. Westerlands ‘A’ will not let this result derail their season, as they are currently 4th in the top division of the Greater Glasgow League. Division 2 Ashvale Victoria 0-5 East Kilbride Y.M. Another brilliant win for second placed East Kilbride YM and they will be very pleased with their performance. Once again, a hat trick for Scott Campbell, he can’t stop scoring, and will be pleased with all three of this goals, as well as the three points. Scott Campbell have been exceptional all season long for his side, and he was supported by goals from Iain Taylor and Ross Anderson. A tough day for Ashvale Victoria, but they have been in good form in the run up to this one, and will hope to return to their best. East Kilbride YM are now 2nd in the table, and Ashvale Victoria are in 6th place, of the Greater Glasgow division 2. I spoke to Graeme Robertson, and he said, “Much improved on last week and delighted with the clean sheet. We could have scored more but fair play to Ashvale they got stuck in and made it difficult at times for us”. North Kelvin Sports 1-13 FC Baillieston A great victory for FC Baillieston, scoring 13 goals, this year’s highest in the Greater Glasgow League. They will be very pleased with their win on the road, and the goal difference may be very helpful at the end of the season. North Kelvin Sport will be hoping for a change of fortune, and to try and pick up points as the season continues. FC Baillieston are up to 4th in a very competitive Greater Glasgow League division 2. They will be pleased with their season so far, and will want to continue their run of form. Westerlands G.G. 0-6 Third Lanark Another exceptional victory for Third Lanark this weekend, they have been brilliant all season long, and they beat a good young side, Westerlands GG. One thing that has been brilliant for Third Lanark has been the fact that they have multiple goal scorers. Last weekend they had 6 goal scorers and they have 5 goal scorers this weekend, many of them different to last weekend’s score sheet. The goal scorers this weekend, were Robbie Sinclair, a striker who scored twice. Wingers Scott Gemmell and Qaasim Ali scored one each, left back Daniel O’Brien and Neil White all scored in their 6-0 win. Qaasim Ali and Alan Semple were brilliant for Third Lanark once again this weekend, but it is great that the club has a massive squad, and any of them able to play up and score at any point. I spoke to excellent manager David Ampleford who said, “Yesterday saw us play some of the best football we have all season. The first half saw Westerlands defend very deep and also a serious facial injury to one of our players meant stitches in hospital. I was later commended by absolutely no medical professionals for my swift action. In the second half we absolutely blew them away. The football was very quick and we varied the way we attacked. In honesty, we were superb. The goals were all decent and saw 5 different scorers. MOTM was Scott Gemmell who had a great game and took his goal very well” President’s League Cup Section 4 Calderglen 4-1 Crookston Castle This weekend, Calderglen were brilliant at home, their win this Saturday put them top of the President’s League Cup as Section 4 comes to a close. They will be very pleased with the result, they were clinical in their victory over a very good Crookston Castle side. Crookston Castle have been brilliant in the league all season, and will want to put this weekend’s cup game aside. Crookston Castle will be happy that they can now fully focus on the league and look to continue moving up the table.
A great weekend in the Greater Glasgow League, Scottish Cup and the West of Scotland Cup. The build up to next weekend’s games will be up this week.
