Greater Glasgow Round Up: Unbeaten Clubs Fly High, Last Minute Drama and Plenty Of Goals
West of Scotland Cup (Round 4)
•Cambria 2-3 Garrowhill Thistle (CEN)
A very tough day for Cambria this Saturday, but they can be proud of reaching the 4th round of the cup, and how they played. They were up against a very good Garrowhill Thistle, who ended up being 3-2 winners in the cup tie, in after extra time. Cambria are a team that are flying high in the league, and they will hope to now focus their full attention on chasing top spot in the top division, and taking all positives from today’s cup tie. An excellent game and an extra time win, the Cambria goals came from Lynxb and Mitchell, they will be proud of the way they performed this weekend.
I managed to speak to Cambria manage, Roddy McDonald, and he said, “A hard fought match with Cambria starting slow with Garrowhill having the best of the early exchanges taking a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes, After this Cambria had the best of the remainder of the first half eventually getting the equaliser after a quick move with Meisters playing an early ball into the right side to MacInnes who put in a great ball for Lynch to knock the ball Home, Cambria were unlucky not to go into the break with the lead. Second half Cambria dominated the game eventually Mitchell finishing well with an assist from Kev Macdonald. Unfortunately for Cambria the referee awarded a penalty with 2 minutes to go after Kev Macdonald brought down a Garrowhill player committing a foul outside the box but the referee awarding Garrowhill a penalty. The Garrowhill Full back slotted the ball home to take the match into extra time. Extra time Garrowhill were the team who showed more hunger taking the lead after 10 minutes of the first half then seeing the game out very well.”
Division 1
•Calderglen 0-1 Newton Vale
Another win, in what was a tough game for Newton Vale, away from home against a good Calderglen side. The visitors will be delighted however with taking home, three huge points, as well as a clean sheet, as they remain top of the table. They have now played 8, won 7 and drawn the other game, an excellent start to the season, and an excellent win this weekend for the club that sit, 6 points ahead at the top of the table. Calderglen will be pleased with a good showing against top of the table, they will have positives to be taken with them onto their next game, as they search for that first win of the league campaign, they will know that it is just around the corner.
I managed to catch up with Newton Vale, and they have said, “A very important three points for us as we know we won’t be allowed to play our passing game in every game and today showed that we can go and battle when need be. Back four and goalkeeper were different class today. Darren Hampson scored the winning goal today and will be disappointed not to have added to his tally but worked his socks off up front. Goalkeeper and MOTM David McKegney was outstanding showing his quality and will be a great addition to our squad.”
•Eastwood Parkmount A 2-3 Glasgow University A
An excellent win for the visitors Glasgow University A, and they have won 3-2 against a very good in form side, Eastwood Parkmount A. The university visitors will be delighted with the win, and they climb the table. They went toe to toe with of the league's most in form sides, Eastwood Parkmount. An eight goal thriller between two excellent division 1 clubs, and Erskine are second placed, and they have a game in hand on the league leaders. Erskine have been going about their business week in and week out, and progressing up the ladder, and they have been brilliant. •Crookston Castle 6-1 Colquhoun United
In form Crookston Castle pick up another victory this weekend, and they currently sit third in the table after this weekend’s 6-1 win at home to Colquhoun United. The visitors will know that their first win is round the corner, but this weekend, the three points go to the hosts. Crookston Castle have been on a roll and have two games in hand on the two clubs above them, they are a point behind second, with two games in hand, and will be ready to set their sights on top of the table Third Lanark!
•East Kilbride YM 1-1 Ashvale Victoria
The scores were level between East Kilbride YM and Ashvale Victoria this weekend. The second placed hosts East Kilbride YM, trailed Ashvale Victoria for a long time, they were 1-0, but then East Kilbride YM, scored the equaliser with the last kick of the game, and the goal was scored by the brilliant Scott Campbell. A lot of credit must go to Ashvale Victoria, a side that have put in a brilliant performance, and they will know that they have a lot of positives to be taken from this game.
I spoke to Graeme Robertson, manager of East Kilbride YM, and they have said, “Shocking from us from start to finish today, credit to Ashvale they played well and should have put the game out of sight but we managed to grab an equaliser with the last kick of the game. Poor performance and hopefully have a few more players back next week that we're missing today.”

Another university based side, Westerlands GG will know they were in a tough game this weekend, but they do remain 5th in the league, and will be looking to put this one behind them and focus on their next game. An excellent win for Glasgow University B!
•John Street 4-0 North Kelvin Sports
A win for the hosts this weekend, who brought back a goalless first half to win 4-0 against North Kelvin Sports. In form John Street will be delighted with the win and of course, the clean sheet and will be hoping to continue their run of games. North Kelvin Sports have had a tough start to the season, and will hope that their first win of the season is just around the corner. John Street have been excellent and they are hoping the run of games, will hope that they can propel themselves up the table, further, another good win!
I spoke to John Street, and they have said, “game was probably made harder by a muddy heavy pitch 0-0 took us a half to get started, hatrick from our striker Gary “lental” Logan, seen us stroll the second half”
•Third Lanark 4-3 FC Baillieston
I know the phrase, a game of two halves is used a lot, but in this one, the old clique was all too true! The home club Third Lanark, took a commanding lead in the first half, they went in the break, 3-0 up. A seemingly excellent half time team talk for FC Baillieston meant they came out the block firing in the second half, and they levelled it to 3-3. With not long left on the clock, the brilliant Marc Corlett, appropriately named, Pirlo, for his appearance, stepped up to the plate. Marc Corlett then scored one of the most amazing free kicks, whipped into the top corner, and sealed all three points. An incredible match between two of the league's most in form sides. FC Baillieston did excellently to bring the game back to all square, but an incredible free kick made the difference! Third Lanark now sit on 27 points, having won all 9 of their opening 9 games! They have scored 38 goals this season, but this free kick from ‘Pirlo’ will rank towards the top when it comes to the best of the season, I am sure! FC Baillieston are an excellent side, and they are going to continue a great season in the weeks to come, but Third Lanark continue their winning streak in this one!
I spoke to delighted Third Lanark manager, David Ampleford, and he has said, “I was delighted with our performance in the first half. We outplayed and outfought Baillieston. They’ve been on a run of form and clearly wanted to show us who’s boss. Pirlo has scored from an absolute mile out to make it 1-0 to us. Sempy has scored with rebound from keeper saving his first shot and Wolfy has headered over the keeper. 2nd half, I told the team that it was vital not to concede in first 5 minutes but right enough Baillieston stepped up with an absolute cracker of a free kick after we didn’t clear our lines well enough. Next 2 goals were from Free kicks/Corners where we have cleared the ball but not followed in the second ball. Baillieston really could have taken all 3 points against us. Last minute, Pirlo caused Chaos at Fullarton with a cracking free kick. The ref awarded MOTM to Alan Semple.”
Division 3
•Carradale 4-1 Helensburgh
A tough away day for Helensburgh, as they travelled to Campbeltown to face Carradale. With a stand in goalkeeper, Ali Maule stepping up to the plate, Helensburgh gave it their all. They came up against a very good Carradale side, who will be delighted by the three points. Carradale now sit 6th in the table. Helensburgh will be quick to put this game behind them and hope to get back on track, they do sit 4th, and despite today, they have had a good start in all, at the start of this season. They will move onto a new week, next weekend, and will be ready for the upcoming game! Carradale will be pleased with the three points.
I spoke to Sam Gemmell of Helensburgh, and he said, “Bad day at the office for us as we fell to our first defeat in the league. Took the lead through Tadlock but a deflected free kick for the home side shortly after levelled things up and then they scored with a through ball that caught as flat footed. Second half wasn’t much better as we gave away a penalty and then Carradale wrapped it up when a cross ball got caught in the wind and whipped into the net. We had enough chances in the first half but the failure to take them cost us today against a Carradale team who were always hungrier than us.”
•St Thomas 0-11 Newshot
An excellent win for the away club, Newshot this weekend, and they have been in, incredible form and in their return to league action after a long break, Newshot were back with a bang. Newshot scored 11 goals, including a first half hattrick from Ross Stevenson, scoring three by the 38th minutes. They have been out of action for a long time, due to many reasons, including weather and free weeks, but they were back with a bang. A tough result for St Thomas, but they will hope to turn their season around in the coming weeks. Newshot’s goals were scored in this order: 13’ Ross Stevenson, 18’ Ross Stevenson, 23’ Chrissy Aitken, 27’ Fraz Black, 38’ Ross Stevenson, 30’ Brad Jones, 43’ Liam Campbell, 57’ Aidan Caulfield, 65’ Jordan Sneddon, 78’ Ross Sorley, 88’ Ryan Arthur. Newshot have been in fine form, despite the long break that they have had, and they will be pleased with having 9 different goal scorers this weekend, an excellent win, and they will be ready for the next challenge, and they remain top.
