GCFA Round Up
GCFA Premier League
Glasgow Island 2-0 Muirton
An important game for both clubs this weekend, as they are hoping to get 2018 off to a flyer, and Glasgow Island have done just that. They won 3-1 at home last weekend and a win this weekend, another home win, this time a 2-0 win. The goals came from Zander MacDonald and Derick MacLeod for the hosts, but it was Ferguson O’Hanlon that was awarded man of the match at the end of the game on Saturday lunch time. A tough one for Muirton, they will be ready to bounce back to winning ways when league action returns.
Gryffe Thistle 3-8 Clydeside Athletic
Fantastic win away from home this weekend for Clydeside Athletic, they continue to climb the top division, with eight impressive goals. Hain and Hamilton scored for the visitors as well as a brace from three different players, Clark, Duncan and Katani. A tough result for Gryffe Thistle scoring three, but not the result they were after. A very good side, they will bounce back and they will be a side to watch going forward. Two clubs that are going to be pushing towards the top two places in 2018, and a great start to it for Clydeside Athletic. This is the second week that they have scored 8 goals, making that 16 goals in their two games in 2018, many different goal scorers, proving the strength and depth in the club.
Maryhill Thistle 4-2 Saint Davids
Another tough day out for Saint Davids, the club that have been flying high this season, but have had a tough 2018. They were helped by an own goal and a goal from Samir Khan-Young this weekend, but it was Maryhill that picked up the win and all three points. An important three points meaning that they are now top of the table on point difference, taking top spot from today’s opposition.
Maryhill Thistle will be delighted with today’s performance and the fact they sit top of the table. They will know that it’s hard to get to the top but harder to stay there, as they are now the team to beat. Saint Davids will be back and hungrier than ever when they hope to bounce back to winning ways when league action returns. A fantastic game, with very high stakes this Saturday.
GCFA Division 1
FC Innter 4-4 Glasgow Medics
All square, and the points shared this weekend between FC Innter and Glasgow Medics. The honours even as both teams scored an excellent four each. This draw sees the first points of the season for the hosts FC Innter, they will be hoping to take confidence from this point and hope it will lead to more points as the week’s go on.
Newlands 4-6 UCS
Ten goals between the two clubs, a fantastic match and the result goes the way of UCS. It was Austin O’Donnell that stole the show for the visitors this weekend, as he scored a fantastic hat trick. The other goals came from Jamie McLaren, Scott Patterson and an own goal. Two very clubs and they will be hoping to take a lot of positives and confidence from this game.
Rosehill United 2-1 MSM Burnbank
Rosehill United pick up the win in this one picking up all three points at home a major positive and they will be looking to continue their form going forward. MSM Burnbank are going to be hoping to bounce back to winning ways in the next match. The Rosehill United goals came from Stephen Mullen and Anthony Houston.
Sporto 2-8 Cambuslang United
Brilliant win on the road for Cambuslang United this weekend, they were relentless in front of goal, scoring an excellent eight goals. With two hat trick heroes in the side today and goals from Allen and Hudson to add to that, they put in an exceptional display to take all three points.
The two hat trick heroes were Chalmers and Millsopp scoring three each, making a huge difference this afternoon, and allowing their club Cambuslang United to pick up the win. Sporto will hope to bounce back to winning ways and put this one behind them, but a fantastic win for Cambuslang United one they can be proud of and take a lot of confidence from.
I managed to speak to Cambuslang United, and they have said, ‘Managed to play our usual game in testing conditions, started very well with 3 goals in the first 10 minutes, from then on had control of the game. Delighted with the attitude of the players yesterday, couldn’t have asked for much more.’
GCFA Division 2
Erskine 4-2 Glasgow Ansar
A clash between the two front runners in division 2 of the GCFA this weekend and a win for table toppers Erskine. They pick up an excellent 4-2 win at home to Ansar, a result that may have created separation, and could have a major impact on the end of the business end of the season as we head towards it.
It was Zohair and Gurpal that found the net for the away side, Glasgow Ansar, but it was the hosts proving to be clinical in front of goal. With Erskine Town having goals from Mark Watt and Andrew Wadok, it was Paul Gordon that lead the way in front of goal, scoring a double, to keep his side at the top of the table. A great team win, and two clubs are going to be serious contenders this year at the right end of the table.
Glasgow East 0-8 Lomond Vale
Huge win away from home for Lomond Vale as they pick up a brilliant 8-0 win on the road to Glasgow East. Lomond Vale sat third before today’s games, and with games in hand on Glasgow Ansar. Today they went up to second place in the table and they will be hoping this brilliant form continues.
Greater Glasgow 2-0 Olympique Energetik
A win at home for Greater Glasgow over Olympique Energetik this weekend, a 2-0 win, and will be pleased with their clean sheet. The two clubs began the day level on points, and Olympique Energetik will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways in the coming weeks. The Greater Glasgow goal scorers were Conroy and Udumanga.
Meadow Athletic 1-4 Royal Union
Fantastic away win for Royal Union this weekend, as they return to league action with impact. They picked up a 4-1 win on the road, with goals coming from Cairney, Lees and a brace from McGlip. They will be delighted with their return to league competition, and beating a good Meadow Athletic side, on the road. The Meadow Athletic goal came from Pettigrew.
After a brilliant start to the season, Royal Union will be hoping to push into the top couple of sides in the table as they are poised and ready to do so, and a huge three points will be a big boost in their quest to do so. They will mean to go on in the fine form they displayed today and hope to continue to be clinical in front of goal and push towards top spot.
I had chance to speak to Royal Union manager, Derek Johnston this week, and he said, “In four plus years of running an amateur football club there have been great days and bad. That was the best one yet with Royal Union FC for me! Everyone to a man with 16 used were a credit to the club we are attempting to build. Our challenge now is to build on that performance and keep raising the bar every week!” Ian
